AR New Haven
There is a lot of beautiful art in the 9th Square. I’ve selected only a few murals to bring to life. This digital art is a bit experimental, so it's possible in certain lighting conditions, it may not work perfectly. Each digital art piece needs a “target”, much like a QR code for it to work. So the more complex the mural, the better the digital art will ‘stick’ to the target.
Please walk around and experience all of the art of the 9th Square. Be sure not to miss the window art on Chapel Street.
“Sunshine” Digital art by Marc Pettersen (Crown Street in front of Artspace)
Music by Olive Tiger https://www.olivetiger.net/
This first AR experience uses the Chamberlain sign on the Crown Street side of Artspace as the “target”. It's best to stand across the street and focus on the sign for the digital art to appear. The kid in the dino costume represents my youthful creativity. I will be featuring this character as the mascot for my website as I do more animated art. This piece was animated with a virtual reality program called “Quill VR” With this program, you can sketch out a world in 3D and animate it.
“9th Square Mural” Mural by Francisco Del Carpio-Beltran (Corner of Center Street and Orange Street)
As I walk by this amazingly complex design, I notice people standing in front of it quite often to take pictures. After talking with Francisco, I decided to make it so people become part of the art, with trees slightly waving in the wind and clouds moving. Get a friend and use the photo or video feature of the Eyejack app to take a picture here! (click the button to take a picture or hold the button to take a video)
Being that this mural is so complex, I have ideas about bringing it to life but it will take a bit of time to do it justice! Creating a full digital animated piece is in the plans for the future though.
“A Tribute to William Lanson” Mural by David De La Mano (Crown St between Orange and State)
Music sampled from Nina Simone, “Ain’t Got No/I Got Life”
This design is what inspired me to start creating digital art for the ARnewhaven project. The style and size of this mural takes your breath away.
“NeeNee” Mural by Swoon (Side of Cafe 9 on Crown St)
Swoon painted this mural in 2014 with wheat paste. The intention is for it to degrade over time. This art is almost gone, but can briefly be brought back to life with the AR app. Being that the ‘target’ image is degrading, the art you see with the app will flicker quite a bit, but you’ll get the idea of its original beauty.
